Directed by Philip Kaufman, 1978 | Starring Donald Sutherland, Brooke Adams, Jeff Goldblum
When spores drift to earth from outer space, mysterious pods begin to grow and invade San Francisco, replicating the residents one body at a time; can anyone escape with their identity intact? Philip Kaufman’s superb, suspenseful 1978 remake of the 1956 classic of Cold-war paranoia expands the themes, amps up the horror, and is seriously creepy. It’s also a fascinating refraction of the original’s subtext, through the lens of the dark, fearsome undercurrents in late-1970s American life. Brilliantly cast.
