Directed by Erle C. Kenton, 1932 | Starring Charles Laughton, Richard Arlen, Bela Lugosi, Leila Hyams
An obsessive scientist on a distant south-seas island conducts profane surgical experiments in evolution, eventually establishing himself as the cruel, self-styled demigod to a race of mutated, half-human/half-animal abominations. This restored pre-code 1932 release, based on a novel by H.G. Wells, is beautifully, evocatively shot, and still chillingly effective. No more House of Pain!
